Julia Crouch

I came fairly late to writing – in my past I have been a theatre director, playwright, teacher, graphic designer, illustrator and website designer. But I’m very glad I got here in the end!

I started with some Open University creative writing courses, and, after a few short stories, I took part in NaNoWriMo and had a go at writing longer fiction. I took to it like a seagull to a bin bag and my first novel, Cuckoo, was published in the UK in 2011, my second, Every Vow You Break in 2012, and my third, Tarnished, is out in March 2013. I am also published in Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Brazil and China.

My work tends towards the dark and twisty – the novels are best described as psychological dramas with crime/thriller elements. I like putting my characters through challenging circumstances and seeing what happens. The best part about writing for me is surprising myself with what I come up with.

I live on top of a hill in the Hanover area of Brighton (also known as Muesli Mountain, because of the tendencies of the residents) with my husband and our youngest child. Our other two ‘kids’ are in their twenties and live in London, but like many Brighton offspring, they return quite often, so I’m happy with that. I write in a shed at the bottom of the garden, usually in the company of Keith and Sandra, our cats.
